Saving On Power

Air-conditioning systems account for high proportions of overall power consumption within data centres. In most data centres there is, nearly always, a very conservative over provision of this facility in order to keep the rooms below the maximum temperature required as actual heat disposition is not known.

REM Enterprise™ enables the “mapping” of the complete room’s temperature conditions identifying “hot-spots” and warm aisles thereby allowing the repositioning of either assets generating this excess heat or the air-conditioning units in order that they balance the temperature.

Using REM it could be possible to create a 2 to 3 degree decrease in the “air-conditioned” temperature and therefore, very significant reductions in power consumption.

Unbalanced use of three phase supplies can be easily avoided by monitoring the power at the rack, and even at the shelf if needed, showing dramatic savings and ensuring resilience and proper redundancy.

Saving Space

The distribution of servers and assets within a data centre is often based upon firstly, function and then available power to racks and cabinets which is balanced normally, against the “plate” value provided by the manufacturer.

In reality these plate values are heavily over stated for normal operational running with the highest actual consumption being on “switch on” which again is lower than the “plate” value. Overall this means that racks and cabinets are reaching their theoretical maximum capacity well before there is any real power supply limitation.

By measuring actual power consumption of assets during both switch-on and normal operation REM Enterprise™ enables its clients to better manage the distribution of equipment and thus optimise cabinet space.
